About Thornton W. Burgess

Thornton W. Burgess was born in 1874 in Sandwich, Massachusetts. Growing up there, he had a wonderful childhood, playing in the meadows and woods near his home. In the early 1900s he lived and worked as an editor and writer of a magazine in Springfield, Massachusetts. The memories of his early years inspired him one day to write bedtime stories about the animals and plants found in the fields, salt marshes and woods all around Cape Cod. His little son was away spending time with relatives in Chicago and he decided to write to him and include a bedtime story. Soon the series came to the attention of a Boston publisher and that was the beginning of his career as a well known children's author and naturalist. His books teach children about the habits of the creatures of the forest and often incorporate behavioral lessons. He died in 1965 at the age of 91, but is still well loved and remembered. His legacy continues through the Thornton Burgess Society, which operates the Green Briar Nature Center and the Thornton W. Burgess Museum, in Sandwich, Massachusetts.
